Do you do dental cleanings on senior dogs? (7 years or older)

Yes, however, on senior dogs, we need to perform a comprehensive wellness exam first along with a full pre-sedation bloodwork to ensure your pet is healthy enough for the procedure.

If your pet is healthy enough, we only charge an additional $100 for the blood work on top of the dental cleaning package.

If your pet is healthy enough, we will let you know why and then we can address those issues. The cost of the exam and the full blood work is $55 for the wellness exam and $180 for the bloodwork for a total of $235.

Pre-Sedation bloodwork for seniors explained…

Why is pre-sedation bloodwork valuable?
For animals undergoing sedation, pre-sedation bloodwork is a standard recommendation. This procedure enables our veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s overall health, ensuring they are a suitable candidate for sedation. Any abnormalities revealed in the pre-sedation bloodwork can be addressed by making necessary adjustments to your pet’s treatment plan.

All dogs 7 years and older are considered to be seniors and require pre-sedation bloodwork.

What does pre-sedation bloodwork assess?
The components of pre-sedation bloodwork vary depending on the recommended bloodwork panel. However, it typically includes two primary components: a complete blood count (CBC) and a serum biochemistry. These tests provide essential insights into your pet’s internal health.

How does pre-sedation bloodwork impact treatment?
If abnormalities are found in your pet’s pre-sedation bloodwork, several outcomes are possible. Mild abnormalities may not be clinically relevant, and in some cases, our veterinarian may proceed with sedation without further testing. Moderate abnormalities may be corrected before sedation through interventions like intravenous fluids. However, more significant abnormalities may lead to postponing the dental cleaning until further diagnosis and treatment are completed, ensuring a safer procedure. Our veterinarian will interpret the results alongside a physical examination and medical history to make informed recommendations for your pet’s treatment plan and sedation drugs.

Neglecting your pet’s teeth can lead to periodontal disease.

Plaque and tartar buildup are a natural part of a dog’s life. But left untreated, excessive buildup of plaque and calculus can lead to more serious problems like periodontal disease, chronic pain, bone degeneration, and gingivitis of your pet’s gums.

Non-anesthetic teeth cleaning for your dog

Most dogs and cats are candidates for non-anesthetic oral care. Our board-certified veterinarian and veterinary technicians have the experience necessary to ensure safe and comfortable teeth cleaning to improve your dogs health, appearance, and breath.
